Imbros Gorge Tour

We start the Imbros Gorge Hiking Tour early in the morning with a pick-up service from your hotel. Our bus and tour guide will pick you up around 08:00 a.m., and the return trip is around 20:30. We use only the best buses and tour guides for our tours.

We drive along the northwest coast of Crete, and our first stop is at the village of Skaleta. Here you can enjoy a cup of coffee and a snack, before moving on to the village of Imbros. We arrive at the entrance of the gorge, at an altitude of 700 meters above sea level.

The gorge is in the province of Sfakia, at the eastern slopes of the White Mountain. Imbros Gorge is 8 km long, and its narrowest part is only 1,60 meters wide with a height of 300 meters. Although it is shorter than the gorge of Samaria. It is very popular for hike lovers, offering a different hiking experience than Samaria Gorge.

The scenery is amazing and the low difficulty of the hike makes Imbros Gorge ideal for families with children. It is also recommended for hikers of every age.

Our descent through the gorge is quite impressive. We will see stunning rock formations, various caves to explore, and lovely vegetation such as maples, old cypresses, and oaks.

The fauna of the area is quite rich. It includes wild birds such as the Golden Eagle, the Bearded Vulture, the European Kestrel, the Partridge, ravens, hawks, doves, and many more.

The Imbros Hiking Tour

The duration of the walk through this beautiful gorge depends on your fitness and experience levels. It usually takes around  two to three hours. After that you will reach the village of Komitades. From here we take our bus to one of the most stunning beaches in Crete, Fragokastello.

You will admire the impressive Venetian castle of Fragokastello with its own Mith, related to the legend of Drosoulites.

You may relax on the beach sunbathing, enjoying breathtaking views of lofty mountains, wide plains, and the surrounding deep blue sea. Refresh yourself by swimming in the clear turquoise waters.

You may enjoy a delicious meal in one of the waterfront taverns of the area. After that we are heading back to your bus with unforgettable memories from our Imbros gorge hiking tour.

Itinerary

08:30 am: Bus departure.
Stop at: Skaleta, a small village near Rethymno. Here we have 15 minutes for coffee or a small snack.
Pass by: Plateau of Askyfou is located on the slopes of the White Mountain
Stop at: Imbros village, the entrance of Imbros gorge. After a short briefing from our tour guide, our 8 km hike begins. Usually, it takes 2-3 hours to cross the rocky gorge.
Pass by: Porofarago, Gournia, Stenada, Mesofarango, Gremnaria, Xepitira, and reach the exit of the gorge at the village Komitades.
Stop at: Fragokastelo. Here we have time to enjoy a meal in one of the taverns. Also, you can swim in the crystal waters of the Libyan Sea. Late in the afternoon, we board our buses for the return journey.

What to Bring with you:

Bring walking shoes with rubber soles for a good grip.

Pack a swimming suit, a towel, a hat, sun glasses, and a sun cream. Please bring an extra pair of socks also.

Bring a big bottle of water.
